Steam train out + 6 mile walk back
At Douglas railway station we travel eight miles (20 minutes) by steam train to Santon, where we alight and walk down to the coast at Port Grenaugh with its Iron Age promontory fort – containing a Viking homestead. We turn south along the coastal footpath enjoying wonderful views and marine birdlife, pausing at Port Soldrick, a natural bay inaccessible to vehicles. At the estuary of the Santon Burn, we turn inland and head along tranquil lanes back to Santon station to catch a train or bus home.
Time: 5 hours.
Cost: £60 + £10 per person return fare
(NB. Stout footwear recommended; ground may be sloppy in places. During winter, the bus will replace the train.)
